Dr. Rajakarunanayake has contributed to some of the technologies that helped shape the modern connected world. Across senior positions at Broadcom, MediaTek and Sagence AI, he has worked at the frontier of artificial intelligence, semiconductor systems, broadband infrastructure, Wi-Fi, wireless power, digital video, mmWave radar, indoor positioning, computer vision, medical imaging and low-power AI computing.
Inventions and patents
His innovation portfolio includes more than 130 granted and pending patents and patent applications, together with over 50 technical and scientific publications. His inventions span AI algorithms, wireless communications, intelligent sensing, digital satellite systems, video streaming, edge computing and energy-efficient machine-learning architectures.
At MediaTek and Sagence AI
At MediaTek, he pioneered advanced work in AI-powered mmWave radar, human-presence detection, gesture recognition, indoor positioning and automotive navigation. He also explored how AI methods could support medical imaging and cancer detection.
At Sagence AI, he led research into analog AI accelerators, in-memory computing, computer vision, generative AI, neural-network quantisation and high-accuracy inference using significantly lower computing power.
Princeton and Caltech
He earned his degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Princeton University before completing a PhD in Applied Physics at the California Institute of Technology. His career has also included university research, technology entrepreneurship and the development of early broadband and internet infrastructure.
The Princeton story
While at Princeton, Dr. Rajakarunanayake was a classmate of future Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. In a widely reported 2018 address, Bezos recalled turning to Yasantha after struggling for hours with a difficult mathematical problem. Yasantha recognised the solution almost immediately by connecting it to a problem he had encountered years earlier.
Bezos publicly described him as the "smartest guy at Princeton" and explained that the encounter became a defining moment in his decision to move away from theoretical physics.
